Subscription
Please ensure you have activated your email at newscientist.com/activate and then generate a password by following the link in the email you will receive. You can then use this email address and password to log in to our website and app.
To reset your password, please visit newscientist.com/lost-password . You should then be able to log in again with your new password.
If you have a print only subscription, you will be unable to access this app for free. You can upgrade your subscription to include app access by calling our subscriptions team on the phone numbers listed below.
Subscribers who have subscribed to New Scientist through third parties such as Apple, Amazon, Google Pay or Zinio, do not have access to the website. Please contact these providers for subscription information, technical support, and additional queries.
In the event you wish to cancel your subscription, you may do so by notifying our customer service team by phone or email. Contact details are listed below.
Alternatively, you can log in to cancel at newscientist.com/myaccount - click 'Need Help' and then 'Cancellation Request'
Downloading
If you are a subscriber with app access, make sure you are logged in to the app first. Then, to download an issue, click on the 'Magazine' tab on the bottom ribbon of your screen. Then, hold down on the cover picture of the issue you'd like to download and follow the prompts.
If you are not a subscriber, you can buy single issues by holding down on the cover and following the prompts.
In the first instance, you will need a connection to download new issues onto your app. Once you have downloaded an issue, it will then be available for you to read or listen to offline.
It may be that your device is not connected to the internet. Check that Wi-Fi is enabled and that your device is not in airplane mode before downloading. Alternatively, it may be that your subscription has ended, in which case you will need to purchase the issue as an individual copy or resubscribe to New Scientist.
Yes. When using our new app, downloaded issues of New Scientist will be stored on your device. Any downloaded issues are tied to the device, cannot be transferred to another device and, once you have cancelled your subscription, you will not be able to access these.
Using the app
Issues which you have downloaded will be shown with a tick next to the date. You should click on the tick and then click on the bin icon that appears. To delete all issues at once, go to settings and select ‘Delete all downloaded editions’
When you open an issue from the issue library, you'll see a table of contents. Tap on a section heading (e.g. News, Features, Views) to browse the articles in that section, or tap on a headline to go straight to the article.
To locate the search function, go to your account within the app. Under tools, you'll see 'Search', click on this and type the word or phrase you're searching for.
Yes. Within 'Settings' you'll find a tools section where you can change font size and enable dark mode.
Dark mode can be switched on and off under settings. Alternatively, you can set the app to match the dark mode settings on your phone.
Yes. You can bookmark articles to read later via the bookmark icon in the top right of an article. You can find all your bookmarked articles under the ‘Bookmark’ tab on the bottom ribbon of your screen.
Yes. You can share articles via the share icon. Please note that those you share articles with must be subscribers to read them in full.
This varies depending on device.
For iOS, locate the version number in Settings (at the bottom), and then with two fingers swipe from the left edge of the screen to the right in one continuous motion. Once the logs open, press the send icon and email to app@newscientist.com.
For Android, locate the version number in Settings (at the bottom), and then press and hold the text.

Using the in-app audio
Open an article displaying the audio icon and click 'Listen to this article'. This will add the article to your queue.
To listen to the whole issue, under Magazine select 'Listen to this issue' This will add the issue to your queue
When the audio ribbon is at the bottom of your screen, click on the title of the article. You can then manage the audio queue, including deleting and reordering items
Curate a playlist using the queue and then click the download icon
When you are finished listening, slide left on the audio ribbon at the bottom and click on the X
